Hordes of Photoshop Jockeys

Hordes of Photoshop Jockeys

Hordes of Photoshop Jockeys (2000)

This one is kind of an in-joke.

Back when I used to post my images on Usenet on alt.binaries.pictures.fractals (which were either -- pick one -- the good old days or the dark ages), there occasionally would be some lively (read: flame-filled) discussions. One night, a thread got hot and heavy on the subject of post-processing -- meaning, at least in this particular discussion, the further manipulation of fractal images by exporting them into Photoshop or other graphics programs. One writer, who obviously preferred his fractals to be unaltered (pure as the driven pixel?), complained that if post-processing became acceptable the fractal art world would soon be overrun with "hordes of Photoshop jockeys."

As someone who post-processes with wild abandon, that phrase tickled me. So, naturally, I felt the need to make this image for him and share it.

Strange. I never heard back from him.

Looks more like Hordes of Barbarians ;-).

You know my opinion about it: more or less a false debate. Those who are against post-processing just show their ignorance on how works computer graphics in general. It is all based on mathematics. Bitmap images are stored as mathematical arrays that can be mathematically processed for effects, Vector images are stored as mathematical vectors with the same purpose in mind. As fractals are mathematics, and the best formulas to describe nature, we stay in family. The only difference between a 'fractal' program and a 'non-fractal' (ex: Photoshop)is that the first claims its use of fractals and the other ones don't. BTW, a lot of Photoshop filters are based on fractals.

My only problem with postprocessing is related to this: when rendering or exporting the image from the fractal program for post-processing, it is turned as a bitmap image. You must plan in advance your final dimensions before PP as if you want it bigger, you loose easily quality in the process. If one could do PP from the fractal program, loosing quality is less relevant.
